At this point in my life, I've had brunch about a hundred different ways in dozens of different cities across the United States. From outdoor occasions to imbibed indoor affairs, I've enjoyed this mid-morning meal at just about every setting... except (until very recently) a boat. My friend Shaun graciously invited my brunch buddy Heaven and I aboard a Waterways Brunch Cruise that navigated through Lake Union and Lake Washington. The two-hour excursion was filled with decadent drinks, stunning views and an elegant, yet inviting, atmosphere on the water.
We boarded the 105 foot Emerald Star, the largest vessel of the Waterways fleet, and began our mid-morning adventure through Seattle's beautiful lakes. Gasworks Park was in immediate view as we made our champagne toast. While the boat was large, we were happy to have a cozy private table with a generous outlook of the freshwater adventure before us.
As we entered Lake Washington, we were invited to enjoy an expansive brunch buffet that included fresh pastries, seasonal fruit, grilled vegetables, Applewood-smoked bacon, French toast, roasted potatoes and salads. In addition, Heaven and I got made-to-order omelettes with our choice of fixings: fresh vegetables, cheeses and meats. We were more than enthusiastic about the specialty cocktail selection too. We had a gin-based cocktail called the Orange Blossom to sip on as we neared Mercer Island, where we had an awe-inducing view of Mount Rainier.
No brunch is complete without a mimosa, so I was sure to have one along with a beautifully garnished Chinese Village Mai Tai that Heaven and I shared as we lounged on the Emerald Star's second level outdoor deck. There were so many Seattle sights to see on the two-hour jaunt: Bill Gate's waterfront estate, the Univeristy Of Washington, the 520 floating bridge, the Space Needle, the Museum of History & Industry and plenty of colorful house boats lining Lake Union. With narration by the boat's captain and personal commentary from the crew, I learned even more about the Emerald City all while relaxing on the water.
If you're looking for an out of the ordinary brunch experience on any given Sunday this spring or summer, I recommend setting sail with Waterways Cruises. Just be sure to bring your sunnies, sunscreen and a sun-loving friend!
