I've been mulling over my mantra of "life is as beautiful as you make it" this month and giving it new meaning in the way I view the world around me. Making your life beautiful really does require a lot of effort on your part (no surprise there). Growing strong relationships, keeping a positive attitude and truly searching for the beauty in everything are all ways that I strive to live a happier life. I think one thing that is daunting to anyone trying to live their best life is the idea that every second of every day needs to be perfect and joyful. Being in that headspace will only set yourself up for failure, and it's a headspace I used to put myself in a lot when I was younger. There's no possible way to make your life perfect and happy all the time, but you can and should let yourself feel real emotions like sadness, fear and embarrassment. And in the same token, you should relish happy moments just a bit more. This month's Spotify playlist pays tribute to that idea of finding the beauty in everything and embracing each experience wholeheartedly. Here is Volume Five of Musique du Mois for January 2016.
Walking through Seattle, it's easy to be distracted by the bustling action of the city. But this weekend I challenged myself to find small details of beauty that most might miss. In every unexpected place that I discovered art in, I found myself wanting to learn the story of how each nontraditional piece of art got there.
A lot of the imagery I saw in real life is reflected in the black and white album artwork of songs on this playlist, including "Silhoette" by Karó. In another effort to find the beauty in everything, I've stretched my musical comfort zone by using Spotify's "Discover Weekly" playlist feature to find new tracks I wouldn't seek out on my own.
It's awesome what you can see (and hear) when you put yourself out there and chose to experience the world in big ways and in small. Songs like "New York City" by The Chainsmokers, "Don't Fight The Music" by Virginia to Vegas and "Fly" by Meadowlark tap into those moments of fearless adventure.
I love Coldplay's new album, A Head Full of Dreams, for its inspirational themes and inventive instrumentals. I added my favorite song from the album, "Amazing Day", to the playlist for added illumination.
