Maintaining perfect skin in the Pacific Northwest is a meticulous craft that requires patience and the willingness to change a regime every season. With summer in full effect, I've started up a new routine that anyone can adapt and use to attain sunkissed skin.
Before delving into these products, it's important to know that smooth summer skin starts with a few basics:
- Sunscreen. While this is a no-brainer, I think it's necessary to apply SPF 30 or higher every day (even on overcast days when UV rays are still present) to avoid unnecessary sun damage, especially to the face.
- Sun. After sunscreen is applied, don't be afraid to bask in the sunlight for controlled periods of time. Vitamin D is a must for all skin types, and natural sunlight is one of the only ways it can be attained. Tanning beds do not provide Vitamin D and should be avoided due to other potential health risks.
- Water. Hydrated skin responds better to whatever is applied to it. Drinking water is essential to keeping cool, but it's even more important in keeping skin healthy.
jack black ALL DAY OIL-CONTROL LOTION
The hardest thing about keeping skin fresh during the summer is controlling oil, but with Jack Black All Day Oil-Control Lotion, I can keep my skin hydrated with a matte finish. The Kaolin, Cotton & Vitamin E all help to keep oil at bay throughout the day.
the body shop ALOE SOOTHING NIGHT CREAM
Some might think moisturizing begins and ends in the morning, but after a long day of bearing the elements, I find that my skin needs a little TLC before bed. I love this Aloe Soothing Night Cream because it calms any light sun exposure I might have gotten and evens out my skin tone.
st. tropez SELF TAN BRONZING MOUSSE
Like most residents of the Pacific Northwest, I don't tan easily. Because I don't want to put my skin at risk by prolonging my sun exposure or using tanning beds, I get a bit of extra help building color with St. Tropez self tanning products. Unlike other options on the market, St. Tropez always delivers an even, streak-free bronze glow with a refreshing, light scent. I used a similar St. Tropez travel-sized lotion in Las Vegas last year and fell in love with the results.
west third brand OLD BOURBON EAU DE TOILETTE
Unlike any other season, smelling good is imperative in the summer. I stumbled upon this eau de toilette at a store in Portland called Lizard Lounge. This woody, seductive scent lingers on my skin for hours (like any good fragrance should). West Third Brand also offers plenty of other masculine musks like Vintage Leather and Tobacco 1812.
whole foods GINGER LEMON INFUSED WATER
Drinking water is one thing, but drinking water with lemon and ginger in it is another thing. Lemon water has so many health benefits, and most importantly, its antioxidants promise blemish-free, radiant skin. Because I'm lazy, I grab a bottle of this at my local Whole Foods, but it's easy to cut a few lemons at home and add them to a personal water bottle.
whole foods BIOTIN
Probably my best kept secret when it comes to perfecting my skin is taking Biotin. This B Vitamin accelerates cell growth in hair, skin and nails. While taking this supplement, I noticed my skin becoming more resilient and supple, not to mention I had to start cutting my nails more frequently. Taking this little tablet with my ginger lemon water is what takes my skin to the next level.
axe WHITE LABEL ANTIPERSPIRANT
Sure Axe Body Spray doesn't have the greatest reputation in terms of fragrance, but their new White Label collection is full of products that are refreshingly simple-smelling. Their first ever Dry Spray Antiperspirant is an easy to apply product that keeps me fresh for a long time. The spray does in fact go on dry, leaving no residue on my clothes at all.
eos LIP BALM
Lips require just as much care as the rest of the skin, as they're affected by the same outdoor elements. I almost find that my lips are more likely to get chapped in the summer with all the use I get out of them: sipping on cold drinks, eating ice cream and kissing boys (just kidding, I kiss as many boys in the summer as I do in the winter, a.k.a. zero). EOS Lip Balm always does the trick in keeping my lips soft and ready for a summer romance. The sweet mint flavor is my favorite for its cooling sensation.
Having great skin is vital to being confident in wearing my warm-weather wardrobe. Short-shorts and tank tops will always look better over sunkissed skin.
