Celebrating a birthday in this family is always a delicious affair. I can't think of a more classic tradition than gathering around a table covered in fabulous food in order to cherish the life of a loved one. With a last name like Gooding, you would be right to expect that our family has very good taste.
Today marks my sister's 17th birthday. We took the youngest of our small family out to Lola, a Tom Douglas restaurant located near Belltown, this weekend. Seeing my radiant sister Marisa grow up is altogether beautiful and scary. I want time to slow down, but at the same time I'm so proud to watch my sister soar in her new accomplishments.
Before brunch, we stopped at Le Panier, a French bakery in Pike's Place Market, to get macarons (Marisa's favorite cookie). I got a mocha that was just as rich as it was fluffed with foam. After pilfering around the city that our family knows so well, we sat down at a sunlit wooden table in Lola. I ordered an omelette made with summer squash, Walla Walla onion and minted goat cheese. It was served with smashed garlic fried potatoes, bacon and toast. After indulging in two of Tom Douglas' restaurants now, it's safe to say he is my favorite chef in all of Seattle. Of course I couldn't have a brunch without its essential bevarage: a mimosa.
Just when we thought Marisa's birthday brunch was over, our lovely waitress brought us a batch of complimentary made-to-order doughnuts with peach jam and vanilla mascarpone. The smile on my sister's face was ultimately the highlight of our family festivities. Happy birthday Marisa! Here's to another year of sibling adventures!
