September is one of my favorite months for one particular reason: The September Issue. The ninth month of every year is a special time where fashion publications put out their biggest, most beautiful magazines yet. For female fashionistas, Vogue released an 856-page opus of style featuring models with huge Instagram followings on the cover. GQ wasn't quite as ambitious with the page count, but this September's issue is chock-full of menswear musts for this season.
As with any fashion magazine, the first (5 to 25) pages are usually aspirational ads. But honestly, I love looking at a visually inspiring advertisement, sometimes more than reading the articles further inside. I adore Façonnable's campaign that embraces it's roots in the French Riviera. Check out their summer sale for some last minute deals before the sunny weather starts to become somber.
Briefcases have always been office essentials, but only in recent years have men started to covet and collect them in varying styles and colors. I'm absolutely in love with this burgundy briefcase from Dolce & Gabbana as seen on page 242. Briefcases in bright colors and luxurious leathers can really make your suit stand out a little more. These bags are sleek accessories that are just as useful as they are personally stylish.
One trend revealed in GQ this month is reimagined layering. You may think you've got layering on lock, but now fashion influencers are shaking things up by adding an unexpected piece to the mix: oversized clothing. Start by putting on your usual sleek go-to's, like slim black jeans and your favorite graphic tee, but then add an oversized sweater or overcoat for an oddly flattering top-heavy look. Layering can be even more creative by pairing unexpected shells together, like a denim jacket and a piece of outlandish outerwear as seen above. I'm excited to experiment with different coats and see what layered looks I can create this fall.
No issue of GQ is complete without a celebrity interview or two. Last month's exclusive interview was with Kanye West (or should I say Mr. Kim Kardashian) and this time they questioned Adam Driver on his role in HBO's Girls. The man with a perfectly tousled mane also wears some black and white looks from Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani throughout the pages that are splashed with his words of wisdom. I'm obsessed with the Black Sail by Nautica cardigan he has paired with a simple gray tank top pictured above.
One of my favorite sections in this month's issue was a retrospective on "The Most Stylish Designers Of All Time." From the modernly masculine Tom Ford to the classically quirky Yves Saint Laurent, I loved reading about the signature style of some of the world's most legendary designers. You never really think of the personal wardrobe of someone who designs clothing for a living, so it's cool to see what they're individually inclined to wear.
You can find the September 2014 edition of GQ on newsstands and digital stores now. I definitely recommend owning a copy to prepare for a forthcoming fashionable fall.
