Even the smallest aesthetic choices we make reveal something about ourselves. As the detail-oriented observer I am, I've noticed countless men take out their wallets and phones and made assumptions of the type of lives they lead. Whether it's a duct tape wallet or a Comme de Garçons pouch, a wallet is a key identifier of taste since it's the one thing we all keep on our person almost twenty-four seven. Cell phones have also become attached to our hips, and with so many options to choose from and customize, they've become a status symbol as well. These are my three essentials, and they each represent something about me.
When searching for the ideal wallet, I immediately gravitated toward Jack Spade. The brand is known for its leather goods and ruggedly classic accessories. This oxford and leather bill fold is perfect for holding other necessary essentials, like my Starbucks gold card. The oxford blue cotton on the outside is incredibly soft and the leather is undoubtedly durable. I love that this understated piece came perfectly wrapped in graph paper (which gave me some severe high school flashbacks) and was shipped for free as with all their online orders. A versatile wallet like this works with my favorite blue jeans and my slim slacks.
Bleu de CHANEL is literally a life-changing fragrance. I can't even count how many compliments I've received when I spritz this eau de toilette. It smells sexy, woody, unexpected and determined. A lot like a wallet or a phone, a man's scent is very telling of his personality. Wearing this scent takes confidence and I get even more when I do wear it.
I love my white iPhone 5 so much because I can connect myself with inspiring people, art and ideas in an instant. Protecting my media powerhouse in something fashionable, unique and functional was a must for me. Instead of picking out a pre-designed, run-of-the-mill option, I created my own chic case with Uncommon. You can take any high resolution photo and turn it into a Apple product accessory on their website with ease. I decided to go with one of my favorite photos I've ever taken at Manito Park with Courtney. I took my simple shot of a blooming white rose, edited it and cropped it to be a frosted case. I love the detail, fragility and complexity of the rose. Florals happen to be en vogue for men this season so that's a nice plus. To add to my phone's aesthetic, I took a picture of a CHANEL parfum card on a floral fabric at home as my lock screen background.
Whether you're consciously aware of your own seemingly small aesthetic choices, the essentials you carry in your pocket every day reveal something about your taste and personality. So what do your essentials say about you?
