There's a reason why the Gonzaga student body voted Marissa Morrison as Campus Fashion Icon in the season finale of #trendingnow last spring: her style is stunning. This blonde Broadcast & Electronic Studies babe is always on the go between her internship, her editorial job at The Gonzaga Bulletin and anchoring on GUTV. Despite her stuffed schedule, Marissa's style is never sloppy. Like a true queen bee, her presence commands all the attention in a room. I loved chatting with my fellow fashionista over Starbucks macchiatos and seeing what makes her trendy mind tick.
JG: What are you wearing today?
MM: I usually pick one item of clothing to build an outfit around and today that was my skirt from Francesca's; I love the volume and shape it brings to a silhouette. I paired it with tights from Nordstrom and Dolce Vita booties. My shirt is a basic long-sleeve t-shirt from Gap, it's actually borrowed from my roommate (I steal her clothes way too often). Over that I put an off-white blazer from Nordstrom. I accessorized with a scarf from Madewell, my Michael Kors watch (which is my favorite thing to wear), an Alex & Ani anchor charm bracelet, Kate Spade earrings and my Dooney & Bourke purse.
JG: Who is your style icon?
MM: My great grandmother. I have dresses she bought in New York City in the 60s. I wore them to dances when I was in high school, one of which she got at Saks, and is the same dress worn by the Betty Draper Barbie. I think we have a lot in common with how much we like to shop. In all of her pictures she's dressed exceptionally well. She was very elegant, always wearing hats and gloves in public, and she the attitude to match her style which is always important.
JG: How would you describe your personal style?
MM: My style is very bright and classic with a little bit of prep thrown in for good measure. I'm obsessed with Kate Spade and Lilly Pulitzer. I love how much fun the brands have with fashion. I like to wear pieces lots of color or an eye-catching detail. My clothes are very detail oriented. One of my favorite things about Lilly Pulitzer dresses is the hidden "Lilly" in all of the patterns. Kate Spade's little details, like a hidden spade or the quotes on the lining of her purses and wallets, make me swoon. It's all in the details.
JG: What is your go-to piece and why?
MM: I love blazers. I have a navy blazer from Banana Republic that's probably my favorite thing to wear. Adding a blazer over jeans and a t-shirt or a button down really polishes a look. They are also really functional and can take the place of a sweater or jacket, making them really functional for spring and fall when the weather is unpredictable.
JG: Are you following any 2014 trends?
MM: I really want to try out matching separates. Wearing matching patterns on top and bottom can get pretty overpowering, but a lot of designers are making matching separates that have just enough pattern to be interesting without that "Canadian Tuxedo" effect. Tory Burch made a matching floral button-down/shorts combo last spring that I'm really kicking myself for not buying when I had the chance.
JG: Where is your favorite style scene?
MM: I spent a lot of time in New York City last summer which would have to be my favorite place for style, shopping-wise. But for people-watching and getting inspiration on the street I really love Salt Lake City, Utah. I've never seen more fashionable women than the ones pushing strollers at the City Creek mall. In New York, everyone was dressing for function and they wear a lot of neutral colors, but in Salt Lake, people have more fun with their style. It's not odd to see a whole family looking like they stepped right out of a J. Crew catalog in Salt Lake. Utahns are probably some of the most attractive people in the country.
JG: What blogs do you follow?
MM: I love Pink Peonies. The blogger, Rach Parcell, always features something bright and eye-catching. I also love the Barefoot Blonde. Amber Fillerup has insane style and travel photos. She's also my current hair icon. Her braids are to die for. Oddly enough, both of the blogs are based in the Salt Lake area.
JG: What is on your iPod right now?
MM: I'm listening to a lot of The Mowgli's. They're so fun and upbeat but still have substance. I also love Haim if I'm feeling a little more introspective.
