When I saw athletic shoes being worn in the CHANEL Spring Summer 2014 runway show in Paris, I had realized that the trend was really being taken seriously in the fashion world. Meanwhile, anyone with a less focused eye on the runway would probably say that wearing an athletic shoe with a nice outfit is tacky. But welcome to 2014 folks, sporty sneakers are cooler than your stereotypical stilettos.

These three looks are all using one pair of Nike running shoes I bought for the gym originally (who would have thought?) I love how sleek and simple these shoes are. The black and white combination makes this pair of shoes applicable to any informal getup. In the sporty look I've worn in a previous Outfit of the Day post, I paired the shoes with a ASOS Black x Puma sweatshirt and some fitted khakis. The sweatshirt further emphasizes the sporty style. In my Style Spotlight on the Gonzaga Bulldog Blog, I paired the same shoes with coated denim from ZARA, a Pac Sun baseball tee and the same NYC snapback from Forever 21. This is a great look if you don't want to go strictly sporty with the trend. Finally, for my upcoming feature in College Fashionista, I wore a very similar outfit to the sporty look, but switched the sweatshirt out with one from H&M that's completely urban.
looks for women
Fashion blogger Jacey Duprie of Damsel In Dior looks classic and modern in this neutral look. She's wearing Nike Free 5.0s with all the winter accessories you'll need in a place like NYC. Sabrina Meijer of afterDRK looks fun and flirty in colorful purple New Balance shoes and eye-catching silver pants. Check out a similar pair from the Heidi Klum and New Balance collaboration line. Like CHANEL, Camille Charriere's elegant ensemble looks completely unexpected with some New Balances.
