You can take the girl out of SoCal but you can’t take the SoCal out of the girl. Courtney Fisher, a senior, has everything you’d expect from a California girl: an edgy style, laidback personality and a large collection of Vans shoes. While Fisher misses the endless sunshine and warmth of her home, she brings her own sunshine and warmth with her fashion sense. Even on the gloomiest of days, you can expect to see this style maven donning animal print and a smile. I got the opportunity to discover what makes Courtney so California cool with this insider interview.
JG: What are you wearing today?
CF: I'm wearing a Forever 21 jacket, Hollister top, American Eagle necklace, H&M skinny jeans and leopard print Van Doren Vans shoes.
JG: Who is your style icon?
CF: A mixture of Selena Gomez and Audrina Patridge. They both have a girly style, but can pull off an edgy side at the same time.
JG: How would you describe your personal style?
CF: My personal style is unique. It is definitely influenced by my upbringing in southern California. I guess you could say it made me a little brand conscious, but it also allows me to think outside the box with my outfits and how I choose to piece things together. Some days I feel girly, some days urban — [it] depends on my mood, but I am also open to trying all types of outfit combinations.
JG: What is your go-to piece and why?
CF: I love my Vans. It’s hard to wear them here in Spokane in the winter, but in California I can wear them year round. I have all different styles and colors that can go with any type of outfit.
JG: Are you following any 2014 trends?
CF: I usually go to Pinterest to find style trends or look to my followers on Instagram. I'll search on Pinterest what kinds of outfits have a certain color or type of accessory or clothing piece that I'm trying to match, for example outfits that contain boots or a beanie, then I pick from there what I think looks best and what I can pull from my own closet that is similar.
JG: What is your favorite photo editing application?
CF: I use Afterlight to edit a lot of my photos. I think it has a lot of good filters and easy-to-use editing options such as saturation, contrast [and] exposure, but it also has a fade option that I think gives photos a nice vintage touch.
JG: What is on your iPod right now?
CF: My music taste is always all over the place — kind of like my style. One day I'll feel like listening to Mumford & Sons and the next you'll find me listening to Drake or Kanye West. But ever since the Super Bowl, Red Hot Chili Peppers have made their way back into my playlist.
JG: Who do you follow on Instagram?
CF: I follow a lot of brands like H&M and Forever 21, but I also look at Kendall and Kylie Jenner or Lauren Conrad for some outfit inspirations.
