If I had a nickel for every time I've heard someone say "Britney's back" post 2008, I would be rich enough to buy a Bugatti ... or a Maserati ... hell, even a Lamborghini. Not coincidentally, those luxury cars I just listed off are mentioned in Britney Spears' new banger "Work B**ch".
Britney has been "back" for a while now. The stellar Femme Fatale was a non-stop dance album that kept me moving since it's release in 2011 right up until she released "Scream & Shout" with the least talented member of The Black Eyed Peas (aka will.i.am ... although you could argue that title going to apl.de.ap).
Unfortunately, will.i.am has teamed up with Britney to "produce" her 8th upcoming album. But after listening to "Work B**ch", I'll let flop.i.am stick around as long as he keeps his grumbling vocals off the tracks.
"Work B**ch" is everything and nothing you've heard on the radio lately. It's EDM painted with Britney's British brush. The beat commands the melody of the song, thumping unobtrusively under her vocals until blasting into the forefront as the chorus.
The track is also unique in that there really isn't a chorus. Just several hooks that stand as their own memorable entities. Britney speak sings about having a strong work ethic by asking the listener rhetorically "You want a hot body?" eventually followed by the expletive answer "You better work b**ch."
Only Britney can master a track like this without sounding like a drag queen. What's so unique is her variety of vocal techniques: from enticing whispers, commanding coos, to sinewy singing (especially on the ethereal bridge). The song simply dominates the dance floor. Even with EDM on it's way out the music industry's back door, this track pulls the genre right back in.
So go call the police, go call the governor. But don't tell them "Britney's back", tell them "YOU BETTER WORK B**CH!"
