I absolutely love getting designer catalogs in the mail. Whether it be Nordstrom, or Barney's, or even Land's End. Well the last one we got because I was a private Catholic school boy for - oh wait - all of my life. So those uniforms had to come from somewhere.
Yesterday I decided to pick up the mail, (I know, a chore! I'm actually still forced to do those when I live with my parents!) and usually our pile has some sort of magazine, like my sister's Teen Vogue or my dad's Cigar Aficionado. But this time I was pleasantly surprised to find the J.Crew catalog nuzzled between a pile of bills and Netflix DVDs of The Hills Season Four.
The thing I love about J. Crew is how it's basically the all-American style bible. Monogrammed dress shirts, Italian wool blazers, and of course, cashmere sweaters all adorn the glossy pages of the catalog. I love how natural and effortless J.Crew looks are. I've definitely taken inspiration from them for my own style.
I'm finding as I grow up that I'm attracted to clean lines and simple color palettes or patterns. Imagine that, my style is growing up along with me. And your's can grow up too, even if you don't have a J.Crew sized budget.
Here are some essential tips to achieve that classic East Coast style:
- Own khakis - This is just a must. So many things can go with khakis, just be sure to keep it modern with a slim fit and flat front pockets.
- Keep it simple - Cover up your wild side and say goodbye to prints. Stripes and plaid are your new best friends. When it comes to color palettes, have one or two bold colors in an outfit surrounded by neutrals: black, khaki, navy, grey etc.
- Join the navy - By that I mean get a navy blazer. It's a great first blazer to have if you don't have one already because they go with literally everything.
- Ciao leather - Invest in some Italian leather dress shoes, buy them from Fred Meyer if you have to. But these dress shoes will upgrade your outfit instantly. It's always good to splurge on footwear, especially because it's one thing you won't get criticized for wearing often.
Check out J.Crew's website for more inspiration, and maybe even peruse the sale section just for me.
