When Christmas comes every December, I go into a creative frenzy. It's my chance to do all the things I love to do: decorate the house, put up the trees, shop, wrap presents and craft things.
Here is what you'll need:
- Clear oval plastic ornaments (available at Michaels, Walmart, or similar crafting stores)
- Dry hot chocolate mix
- Mini marshmallows
- Chocolate chips (white or milk chocolate)
- Decorative sprinkles
Making these ornaments is super easy and fun, so be sure to do it with friends (maybe with a Starbucks in hand like I did). The first thing you'll need to do is open the top of the ornaments and fill them carefully with hot chocolate mix. I recommend using hot chocolate mix that doesn't already have mini marshmallows in it because they are all covered in the mix, fresh marshmallows look better.
Second, place a layer of sprinkles on top of the hot chocolate mix. The reason why you want oval-shaped ornaments is because they have less volume than traditional circular bulbs. When you fill them with hot chocolate mix, you might go through two packets. When you put the layer of sprinkles, you'll also have to use a lot to be visible from the outside. You can also use peppermint bark chunks in place of sprinkles.
After that, you can add chocolate chips and marshmallows. It makes sense to put the marshmallows on top because they are the lightest and you don't want them to get squashed by the weight of the chocolate chips. The more you add, the more compacted the ingredients become.
Finally, put the top on the ornament and tie on a bow. Now it's perfect for hanging on the tree until you want to give it to someone. Make sure to store it with the top facing upwards so the mix doesn't "dirty" the rest of the ingredients in the ornament for appearances sake. When you give the ornament to someone, make sure to mention it has two servings so they don't try to drink an overfilled cup of hot chocolate.
I can't wait to give these to my lucky recipients (who hopefully aren't reading this)! This gift is perfect on it's own or part of a larger holiday drink themed gift. Nothing says happy holidays than a cup of hot chocolate!
