The American Music Awards were the last place I would expect to learn about new music, especially since I'm up to date on every pop song out there. But on Sunday night, I watched a performance by a band called A Great Big World featuring a familiar face, Christina Aguilera.
A Great Big World is an indie pop duo that was born while the musicians were studying at NYU. Ian Axel's vocals are unique, soft and bright on "Say Something". The lyrics are strikingly simple and match the bare-boned instrumentation.
What's most surprising about this track is Christina's role. Instead of belting out high notes with enough power to light up New York City, Christina sings in a supple range. The collaboration is surprising and works perfectly. The music video sees the three musicians gathered around the piano as scenes of love, fear, heartache and death flash in slow motion throughout the video.
Even though the song is about giving up on someone, there is a unsaid amount of strength that arises in the swells of this song. The tension and release in this track truly makes the emotion feel palpable. It's inspiring enough to get you through any situation where you have to let go of someone you love.
