The hip-hop/rap genre has very much been a man's world up until the past few years. Lil' Kim, Nicki Minaj and Azealia Banks are some of the most successful mainstream female rappers out there. Iggy Azalea, hailing from Australia, stands out against her competition with her style, unique sound and ferocity.
"Change Your Life" was actually released a while ago, but wasn't available to the US iTunes store until today. The song has a static-infuzed beat over epic piano, stuttered synths, and outside vocalizations. Iggy spits her bars with a fierceness that is instantly identifiable. Her nasally tone works amazingly well, considering the fact that it's well ... nasal. What makes her voice unique is the of stressing certain consonants or dragging out vowels. While the chorus isn't "life changing" (sorry, bad pun), it's undeniably catchy and does its job.
T.I. makes an appearance on the track, breaking up the song and adding some credibility to Iggy's image. While I personally think she doesn't need a male rapper to validate her own importance in the industry, T.I.'s verse attracts a wider audience of rap fans.
The music video finds Iggy making the most of her model status (she is legitimately signed to Wilhelmina Models) by slinking around in bright high fashion outfits. The video also finds Iggy dancing as a Vegas showgirl while singing about how she can change a man's life with her exorbitant amount of wealth.
The song's lyrics are fun, even if the theme of having a lot of money adds nothing new to the genre. But coming from a woman's perspective, bragging about money is endearing. Yes the music video is flashy and full of sex appeal, but the song still has a sense of empowerment.
